The deportation of the Crimean Tatars, was one of the worst examples of crimes committed by the Soviet government during World War II. It was the ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide of at least 191,044 Crimean Tatars in 18–20 May 1944, ordered by Lavrentiy Beria, head of the Soviet state security and secret police, acting on behalf of Joseph Stalin.
