Barbary Falcon photographed for the UNHCR in 1998.
The Falcon was used in the campaign film as the symbol of freedom for Ukranian citizens. The bird travelled with us in our taxi, in his cage, from his home in a Ukrainian aviary, to be photographed at sunrise overlooking the Black Sea. The Bristol hotel in Yalta, where we were staying, operated a no pets policy, so we had to smuggle him, under wraps, across the hotel foyer, in to the lift and up to my room, where he spent a quiet night in the corner. After the shoot, the bird was returned to his home, none the worse for wear from his unusual mini break.
